What is usenet exactly?
Usenet stands for Unix User Network. The decentralized network was invented for the distribution of binary files and text messages. Usenet has it's own architecture and has a global reach. It consists of many newsgroups where users can read and post messages. When one person wants to send a message to another, the message's travels through three
servers that make the messsage available to the public. In contrary to what most people think, usenet isn't a part of what we call the internet, same as email. The usenet is an autonomous system that can use different protocols. Some usenet history: in 1979 usenet was developed by Jim Ellis and Tom Truscott. It was developed at Duke-university. The message's and files on usenet are divided into categories which are called newsgroups. Quite similar to threads in a forum.
Usenet itself also uses this structure only there they are called newsgroups. These can be text oriented or file oriented. When they are file oriented they are called binaries and have a name like alt.binaries.games. Above the newsgroups the usenet is divided into hierarchies. Some of these hierarchies are more or less controlled and follow certain guidelines. These are called the big eight and are comp.*, talk.*, soc.*, sci.*, humanities.*, misc.*, news.*, and rec.*. The alt.* hierarchy, famous for it's alt.binaries.* newsgroups isn't controlled. Most newsgroups are in the format: hierarchy.subhierarchy.subject which for example looks like alt.binaries.games for an uncontrolled files oriented games newsgroup where you are likely to find games which you can download.
How is the usenet being used?
The usenet can be used for different things. There are 3 popular uses. The first one is a means to connect to people that you do not know to talk about different subjects. Usenet can be interesting for people that want to discuss subjects that are very specialized. The second popular usage is the distributions of files.
